Whether you are a beginner grower harvesting produce out of your home, or you are a farmer running a large-scale operation, our knowledge center is the one stop hub for all thing growing and harvesting.

What time of day is best for plant watering?

Morning watering is safer than evening watering as the plant has time to dry before the sun sets. If watering at night, water tends to stay in the soil, near the roots, and on the foliage, which allows for rot, fungal growth, and insects.

When do you harvest cucumbers?

Cucumbers have a lengthy growing season, and they are usually ready for harvest 50 to 70 days after planting. Each individual fruit ripens at a different time, but it is essential to pick them at the correct time to avoid a bitter flavor that develops in cucumbers left on the vine for a long period of time.

What are the harvesting seasons for my veggies and fruits?

Tomatoes: Harvest times vary, but most types are ripe from mid-July to the end of September.

Sweet Corn: Corn planted in spring is ready for harvest from mid-July to September.

Garlic: Garlic is planted in fall and harvested in late July or early August.

Melon: Most melon types ripen in late summer and early fall.

Cucumbers: Cucumbers start to ripen in midsummer. With regular picking, vines will continue to produce cucumbers until fall.

Potatoes: Potatoes become ready for harvest from July through October.

Hot Peppers:  Peppers start producing ride products at midsummer, and continue to produce until frost.

Onions: Harvesting time for onions begins in midsummer and continues to fall.

How can I preserve my harvest?

Ensure safe canned foods, avoid unsafe equipment, check food acidity, and use the right jars and lids.

What are some ways to reduce food loss and waste?

The best approach to reducing food loss and waste is not to create it in the first place. Waste can be avoided by improving product development, storage, shopping/ordering, marketing, labeling, and cooking methods. If excess food is unavoidable, recover it to donate to hunger-relief organizations so that they can feed people in need. Inedible food can be recycled into other products such as animal feed, compost and worm castings, bioenergy, bioplastics and clothing.
